Modern Blade, Mid Mallet and Mallet Models Deliver Tour-Proven Performance in New Silver Mist Finish FAIRHAVEN, Mass. (Jan. 21, 2014) – Master Craftsman Scotty Cameron, inspired by the world’s best golfers and driven by an unparalleled attention to detail, introduces the new Select and GoLo putters – high performance, tour-proven models with precisely crafted looks, sound, feel and balance. Every Scotty Cameron creation is rooted in decades of craftsmanship, putting research and testing with the best putters in the game, both inside Scotty’s state-of-the-art Putter Studio in California and on putting greens around the world. On the PGA Tour, Scotty Cameron putters have been the choice of more players since 1997 and counting. New Scotty Cameron Select putters feature precision milled, highly refined shapes with tour-validated balance and stability. The new line includes three modern blade designs from Scotty’s tour-proven Newport family (Newport, Newport 2 and Newport 2.5) and two modern mid mallets (Fastback and Squareback) with innovative new crisscross sight lines for improved alignment. New Scotty Cameron GoLo mallet putters feature an elegant rounded profile, with soft lines and necks for players that want to rid themselves of technical thoughts and produce a stroke with a natural flowing arc. Four models (GoLo 3, GoLo 5, GoLo S5, GoLo 7) with different size and neck configurations allow players to choose their preferred appearance and toe flow. Select and GoLo putters use a deep-milled face to deliver tour-proven feel and soft sound. Select weights in the heel and toe are perfectly matched to the shaft length to provide balance and stability. Each model features striking new cosmetics, accented by a new Silver Mist finish with framed and double milled red-dot graphics and double beveled weights.
“My team and I are focused on one simple goal, designing and producing the finest putters in the world. The new Select and GoLo families, in addition to our high-MOI Futura X models, take us to the next level of performance and pure putting confidence,” said Cameron. “Every day, we strive to learn more about how the ball, the putter and the golfer work together, and how we can improve that connection. We’re continually experimenting with new designs, new materials and technologies. “After using one of our putters, golfers sometimes tell me, ‘I don’t know why I like it, I just like it.’ That’s where the attention to detail comes in, making sure there is complete harmony between how it looks, how it sounds and how it feels.”
New Select putters are available in golf shops beginning March 14. New GoLo models are available beginningApril 18. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 12.57.20 PM SCOTTY CAMERON SELECT: The new Scotty Cameron Select putters are precision milled to meet the performance requirements of the world’s best players for looks, sound, feel and balance. The new Select line enhances the tradition of Scotty’s Newport family, a longtime tour favorite, while introducing new Fastback and Squareback mid mallets with advanced weighting and alignment technology. The new Select Newport, a soft, modern blade with a plumbing neck, features a shorter blade length with back surfaces that round and roll elegantly into the ground. Select Newport 2 is a longer blade with crisp back angles, a plumbing neck and a single black sight line for refined precision. Select Newport 2.5, a new addition to the Select family, features the same crisp, modern blade as Newport 2, but with a short flare neck for increased toe flow.
“The Newport is roly-poly, with softer corners, while the Newport 2 is boxier and more square. Same performance, it just depends on which visual you like better,” Cameron said, “We’ve added a Newport 2.5, which is the same head as a Newport 2 but with a smaller, flare neck and a hair less offset. Visually, when we shorten that neck, the blade looks longer. By shortening the neck, the shaft axis also comes more toward the heel, which creates more toe flow for more of a swinging gate versus the more mechanical look of a plumbing neck.”
The new Select Fastback and Squareback are modern mid mallet designs with a single bend shaft that promotes minimal toe flow for players that want, or need, less arc in their putting stroke. The Fastback is round and soft like a Newport; the Squareback is crisp and boxy like a Newport 2. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 12.57.00 PM Each have a short blade length and an extended back with a new, red aluminum soleplate that allows for a thicker steel face for solid feel. Vertical and horizontal “pop-through” sight lines on the back flange are positioned directly between a player’s eyes, providing a visual reference to help square the face.
“The new aluminum red sole plate allows us to take some weight and put it where we want it and need it most. We’ve grown the back, pulled in the heel and toe, thickened up the face and the top line. As a result, we’ve enhanced everything from the shape to the feel to the sound,” Cameron said.
“The red, crisscross sight lines are a continuation of the sole that pops up through the head. We’ve found through years of research at the Studio that the best players in the world putt with the ball slightly up in their stance, under their left eye. This places the crisscross sight lines, which are located on the back flange, directly under their nose and between their eyes.
“Whether you prefer a horizontal or vertical sight line, the crisscross makes it easier to square the face, putting your eyes in the right position to execute a proper arcing stroke. If you set the putter too far forward, the crisscross will make the face appear closed. If you put it too far back, it will look open. Alignment is more and more becoming the talk of the tour, and the feedback out there has been fantastic.”
Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 12.56.15 PM SCOTTY CAMERON GOLO: The new Scotty Cameron GoLo mallets feature an elegant but modern, easy to align, rounded profile and racy soleplate design with Select weighting technology for increased stability. The balanced GoLo design helps reduce the tendency to manipulate the face and allows the stroke to flow naturally. Each of the four models – GoLo 3, GoLo 5, GoLo S5 and GoLo 7 – has a clean, tour-preferred appearance that flows from the shaft down through the top line, continuing down through the curved back, which flows to the ground. The refined mallet shape with a single black sight line helps square the face, while the triple-angled sole with a slight camber allows for smooth takeaway. A slightly asymmetric back with a shaved heel promotes the ideal flowing stroke along an inside to square arc, with the 6061 aluminum sole plate and Select weighting technology providing exceptional balance, stability and roll. GoLo 7, the original GoLo model, offers the largest head design with a clean, flowing single bend shaft for near minimum toe flow. The GoLo 5 features similar construction and performance, with a 10 percent smaller head size. The GoLo S5 is built with a straight-in, near-center shaft for a clean setup with no visible offset. The newest addition to the GoLo line, the GoLo 3, has the smallest head shape with a heel-shafted flow neck for maximum toe flow, a unique combination for a mid mallet-style putter.
“GoLo 5 and GoLo 7 did very well on tour but we still had some guys asking for an even smaller head,” Cameron said. “It’s very difficult to take something larger and get the same design, looks and feel when you make it smaller. If you look closely at the GoLo 3, it has a pinched flow neck very reminiscent of our popular Del Mar model. I took the best parts of the Del Mar and the GoLo and started blending them together, shaving the heel to make it nonsymmetrical so the heel comes in and makes the toe look like it automatically wants to work. It comes around the back, pinches into the heel and flows up the neck into the shaft, promoting a generous open and close toe flow motion.”
REFINED COSMETICS: The new Select and GoLo putters return to the silver-and-red designs that have become synonymous with Scotty Cameron putters across the worldwide professional tours. Screen Shot 2014-01-21 at 12.56.03 PM The new models feature a new, soft Silver Mist finish, with Scotty’s race-car inspired, framed and double-milled cherry dot graphics in the back and cherry dot weights in the sole to help create a modern but timeless appearance. Red Pistolero and Pistolini grips further enhance the look.
“We’ve optimized the paint process to produce this buttery, elegant Silver Mist finish,” Cameron said. “And I think the black sightline we’ve chosen for several of the models, as opposed to using white, gives it a richer, more elegant look. The entire look is very sleek, it’s industrial and mechanical and yet it has elegance.”
PISTOLERO/PISTOLINI GRIPS: The Scotty Cameron Pistolero and new Pistolini grips, featuring the dancing Cameron logo, provide a secure hold and great feel in golfer’s hands. The Select Newport, Newport 2 and Newport 2.5 blade models feature the smaller Pistolini grip, while the Fastback and Squareback mid mallets and entire GoLo family have the Pistolero.
“What the head looks like and how big it is, dictates a feel of what you expect to feel in the grip, so we try to match the grip size and what we feel. Pistolini is more of a standard size grip for a Newport or blade style head. Once we start getting into a mid mallet or larger, we need the larger Pistolero grip to accommodate that feel for the head size.”
PRICE AND AVAILABILITY: New Scotty Cameron Select putters are available in golf shops beginning March 14. New GoLo putters are available beginning April 18. Both models have an MSRP of $375 ($349 MAP). ON THE WEBwww.ScottyCameron.com PRODUCT SPECIFICATIONS: Scotty Cameron Select

Well looks like the Ping R&D Department in Phoenix, Arizona is at it again. The PGA Show in Orlando must have been buzzing with the new Ping Ketsch Putter. Ping continues to help create and develop products for the green that will assist the golfer in touch, feel and building confidence. When it all comes down to it, the flat blade is one of the most important if not the most important club in the bag. I have said it before and I will say it again, putting is around 40% of all the shots you take on any given round, so it makes perfect sense to find a putter that will knock the balls in the hole. Choosing a putter can be daunting, but when you find the one that is forgiving and gives you the confidence you need to drop those knee knockers in...well that is priceless. Let's take a look at a putter that Ping is launching to the marketplace this Spring. Ping Ketch Putter Face view TECHNOLOGY Ping is staying with their innovative True Roll Technology (TR) in which the variable-depth grooves are created to equalize ball speed across the entire face of the flat stick. What is True Roll Technology? The variable-depth grooves are designed with the deepest in the center of the face and get gradually shallower toward the edges.  This, Ping says, helps to make the ball roll the same distance regardless of where on the face the putt is struck. In addition, the precision-milled Ketsch offers extreme forgiveness and accurate alignment and its 17-4 stainless steel sole weight creats a high MOI.  Three white, contrasting sightlines extend from the leading edge of the matte-black crown to make is easy on the eyes to aim. The Ketsch comes is variable length range with adjustable shaft: 31-38 inches with a head weight at 355g and lie angle range of +(-) 2 degrees. Ping Ketch Putter Top View RECOMMENDED FOR While we have not had the Ping Ketsch arrive at our testing center as of yet, I would have to suggest that this putter is for the player looking to improve his/her aim with very appealing set up lines and the a solid sole place to assist in your address position. I also feel that is putter would be a great choice for the golfer having difficulty with speed and distance control. Ketsch seems to be offering forgiveness on the greens for mishits.   Final Thoughts Putting without doubt is so important to ones scoring. However, a player just can't go out and grad a putter that 'looks' good on the rack. We all need to find that putter that we feel is an extension of ourselves and gives us the utmost confidence when we stand up to the putt. Ketsch will be arriving at our testing center soon, but from the looks of it and research, I think this putter is going to fit well in the bag of many golfers looking to lower their PPR (putts per round). As soon as we get our hands on the Ping Kestch, we will do a hands on review and publish our thoughts. So stay here and get excited for the new Ping Ketsch Putter.   'keep smiling and always believe'

Putting is a part of the game where feel is everything!  A golfer needs a lot of feel and confidence on the green.  Odyssey is known for some of the best feeling putters out on the market.  Their Protype Tour Series was designed to promote feel and accuracy.  These putters were created using feedback from Tour players all over the world.  This line of premium putters are meant to make very golfer feel like a pro. These putters have a new milling pattern on the face that is sharper and deeper.  With the deeper and sharper milled pattern on the face of the putter, the interaction between the ball and the face will promote a truer roll with consistency.  These putters are also made from 1025 carbon steel which allow for a softer feel.  Using a putter with a softer feel and a truer roll will definitely improve your putting from anywhere on the green. The Protype Series was crafted to make the putter head go along with the overall length of the putter. From Odyssey:
Subtle tweaks to the design allow us to optimize the putter head with the shaft length using slightly heavier heads for shorter models to optimize feel, control and accuracy.

Specs:

The #9 putter is available for both right-handed and left-handed players.  This putter has a mallet head that comes in 33, 34, or 35 inches in length and has 3 degrees of loft with a lie angle of 70 degrees.

Final Thoughts:

This putter looks awesome!  The polished steel gives this putter a classic look.  Odyssey will also allow you to customize any putter in the Protype Series.  You can select among six different colors for grips and putter head paint fill.  I have always been a fan of the Two-Ball putter and I can’t wait to get my hands on this one!  This putter is available, so choose your favorite color and go make some putts!

SeeMore Putters FGP USA Special Tour Putter Review: Reward Your Game

Screen Shot 2014-02-10 at 12.07.20 PM

Putting is can be one of the most rewarding part of the game and can be the most disappointing part of the game. Players are realizing that one of the most important investments is in a putter because they will get the biggest return for the dollar. Why you ask? Because approximately 2/3 's of your score is on the flat plush surface we call the green. So the old saying, "Drive for Show and Putt for Dough" really means something. We can smash it down the middle of the fairway, hit all the greens in regulation, but if we can't sink even a three footer, there is no chance we will see our index drop at all. They don't give you a great handicap because you have split every fairway. You get handicaps based upon the score you post and the last, and arguably the most important, is the putt that drops in the hole. The Putter is your means to an end. Zach_Johnson_SeeMore There are so many putters to choose from when you step into a golf shop. Offset this, two-ball that, long, short, grooved, smooth....but in the end what really matters is how it feels in your hands and most importantly is that it sets up squarely to your intended target. This is a marriage and you want something you can live with and be kind to. This is where the SeeMore Putter comes in. We had the chance at Bunkers Paradise to give the SeeMore FGP USA Special Tour Putter a real run for the money. The testing was grueling on the course, in a tournament and at the practice putting green and it kicked the 'putter butt' of all others. Let's take a closer look at what makes the SeeMore Putter stand out and give you a true internal smile.   SeeMore FGP USA Special Tour Putter Technology [caption id="attachment_27562" align="aligncenter" width="740"]'Hide the Red Dot' 'Hide the Red Dot'[/caption] Rifle Scope Technology (RST) 'Hide the Red Dot' All SeeMore putters have a very unique and unprecedented technology that will allow the putter to 'Lock On' to his/her line. Each putter had a red dot just behind the bottom shaft of the putter and between two lines on the putter head. If the player 'Hides the Red Dot' by simply lining up the black bottom portion of the shaft between the two white lines and cover the signature red do on the heel of the top line, the golfer will set up more consistently every time in relation to the intended target. FGP Series Putters feature 'Face Balance' at impact: No matter the arc style you have in your putting stroke, you will see more square-to-square at impact.
With every SeeMore model, the putting stroke follows a perfect arc backward and forward where the putter releases perfectly as the it squares to the target line and on a slight upstroke, promoting a consistently perfect roll. The SeeMore RST helps the golfer stay on the perfect path throughout the stroke.
100% Milled in USA with Carbon Steel  and Stainless Steel and cast 303 stainless steel heads with precision milled faces. Center Shafted with black shaded lower portion to assist player in target alignment, squareness at address and confident stroke from start to finish.

SeeMore Putter Close

LOOK/FEEL Placing the SeeMore Putter in my hands was like finding a long lost friend. It has been a long time since I have had a putter in my hand that really feels good in my hands and good in my mind. Before my first putt, I took a long hard look at the design and how it really felt lining up a putt. It felt like a true extension of my arms and hands -- the putter felt as one with my grip and set up. What I was impressed with is the 'Rifle Scope Technology'. You see, I am not one to research any products before I get my hands on them so that I am not swayed any one way or another or have too much information so that it may take me away from how it truly looks, feels and performs. I noticed the 'Red Dot' and bold white lines perfectly positioned in relation to the shaft and it felt natural standing up and addressing the ball. I found myself  'hiding the red dot' naturally before I really knew why. Overall the look and feel was perfectly matched...like adding a new family member who you enjoy the company of. I especially like the black head and the black painted lower part of the shaft--really made me feel strong and confident over the putt. PERFORMANCE http://youtu.be/hObf9PaX1H8 Without a doubt the SeeMore FGP USA Special Tour Putter sets up squarely as they promise and I found that my overall stroke and arc improved in just a few putts. The "Refile Scope Technology' is hands down one of the best I have ever seen or had the opportunity to play with. The golf ball just rolls off the milled face without any jumping. I think that result is in part associated with a more squared-up face to the intended target from the 'Rifle Scope Technology. I was a little hesitant at first after examining the putter and seeing that it was what I call toe-weighted (balancing putter shaft on one finger and the toe of the putter head turns down). I am known for looking around for a 'face balanced' putter (one where balancing as mentioned earlier and the face is pointed to the sky). I stand corrected now as I have had great success with the SeeMore FGP USA Special Tour Putter. I played one competitive round and only had 30 putts total in 18 holes. The sound off the putter is solid and the feel in the hands is compact and effortless. The result is one of confidence building as putt after putt either dropped or just rimmed the edge. I tried all various lengths and still found the putter to react similarly and with consistent near sweet spot impact. PROS Their are a number of pros associated with the SeeMore Putter: 'Rifle Scope Technolgy'; grooved hitting area for more consistent control; solid weighted putter head; and easy to address all around from head to grip. Nicely Priced. CONS If you really are set on an off-set head, then this would not be the putter for you, but I would give it a try...it changed me. Final Thoughts This really truly is an amazing putter and I can see how SeeMore is making waves in the golf world in amateur golf and professional golf. It is so easy to set up and give you the sense that you are spot on with your target. With that kind of feeling, you can truly give the putter a nice stroke with the ball just rolling off the face and down your intended target line.   'keep smiling and always believe'

2014 Bettinardi BB32 Counterbalance Putter Review: Made in the USA

No, I will not get into the commonly brought up topic of anchored stroke ban and the subsequent release of counterbalanced putters to offset the impact the decision has on the game.  I will, however tell you about how awesome it is that a high-end putter company like Bettinardi has come out with a counterbalanced version of their popular "BB" line of putters. As I say often about my wife "beauty + functionality = a better Bruce", can be directly related to the BB32 counterbalanced putter by Bettinardi. From Bettinardi.com
The Bettinardi counterbalance models are offered as another alternative to the anchored putting stroke. The purpose of our counterbalanced putters is to move the overall balance point of the club closer to the hands of the player. The weight is added by extending the shaft and grip by 3 inches which adds 37 additional grams. We then increase the putter head by the same amount, 37 grams to 395 grams, in essence countering the weight on each end of the putter. This weighting technique boosts the club’s overall moment of inertia (MOI), so that it swings and feels more stable than ever. The three models available in counterbalance are the BB1 for traditionalists, the BB32 for mallet lovers, and for those looking for the most forgiving head we suggest the BB55, a distinctive MOI putter.

Weight: 395 grams Standard Length: 38″ Material: Mild Carbon Steel Finish: Satin Silver Grip: Red WINN 17” (135 grams) Headcover: BB Series Red/White/Blue Dexterity: Right Handed Loft: 3° Lie: 71°   How does it look? I can't help but gush over how beautiful the BB32 is.  I am pretty much in love with every aspect of it.  From the mid-mallet pear-shaped head to the red/white/blue paint fill scheme. There is a sense of serious quality when looking at the BB32.  It is simple, yet loud enough to scare away a small animal.  The honeycomb milled face provides a lovely sense of craftsmanship that leads to the no-nonsense sole of the putter which displays its namesake as well as its weight in grams and the ever popular "Made in the USA", all in red, white, and blue.

Photo Feb 16, 12 11 35 PM

How does it feel? The BB32 is a pretty straight forward putter in terms of feel.  It is soft, slightly denser than other milled putters, and clickier as well.  The carbon steel used to make the head is going to feel a bit different than other high end milled putters and some may imply that it is an "acquired taste" that you may love, or hate. Miss hits, like all putters, aren't going to feel as awesome as center strikes.  To me, I felt as if misses felt empty and a little frustrating.  It is probably a stigma associated with knowing you are rolling such a high end putter.  In any case, the feedback wasn't harsh, but denser than normal.  It certainly made me try much harder to focus on hitting the sweet spot.

Photo Feb 16, 12 11 08 PM

How does it perform? It is in my opinion that the ability of the golfer to adapt to a counterbalanced putter will directly affect performance.  There is no such thing as "auto pilot" in this putter.  I, personally, had a tough time finding a groove with it as I requested that the putter be a 35" model (I like my hands hanging low) so I could choke up to about 33" but I believe there isn't enough weight in the butt end of the grip to fully counterbalance the 400g head (Bettinardi designed the putter around 38" to add extra weight in shaft length). In regards to the heel/center/toe performance, the results were quite simple.  The BB32 was an extremely accurate putter on all accounts.  Toe and heel strikes kept a level of forgiveness that allowed minimal distance loss and dispersion.  Essentially, on a mishit with the BB32 you are still going to have a great shot at staying close to your intended line. Final Thoughts: I look at this putter every day and marvel at how nice it looks.  Yes, a lot of this is subjective to my tastes, but I can honestly say that this may be one of the finest crafted putters I have seen to date.  Lining up for a putt is a joy and full of confidence.  I am still not sold on carbon steel as the feel is a little too dense for me but this putter will definitely appeal to the golfer that enjoys a little more "click" at impact.  The Bettinardi BB32 is a putter to put at the top of the "must try" list for anyone serious about their putters. You can find more information about the BB32 Counterbalanced putter at Bettinardi.com.

Nead Custom Putters AS10 Putter Review: Wants and Neads Custom Putters

The crew over at Nead Custom putters were kind enough to send us over their AS10 model putter to test out and review.  I first met the crew of Nead Custom Putters on Twitter @wantsandneads.  I kept seeing photos of these beautiful putters that I couldn't take my eye off of so I had to reach out to them.  Once I contacted the crew, I knew right away they were a class act company.  Very cordial and respectful but professional as well.  I was immediately impressed with how they conducted their business.  After some brief discussions, they decided to send over their AS10 model for a review and lucky you, a giveaway after.  So let's break this down. Here are the Specs of the AS10 Putter they sent over for me to review. Carbon Steel Nickel Plated Roll Groove Face Plumbers neck Site line 35” Coppertone shaft Royal Grip DSC_0045

Looks:

As you can see by the photos, this putter is a looker.  The AS10 has beautiful lines and a classy look made with carbon steel.  As a surfer you sometimes will look down a new surfboard at the lines and sometimes are very impressed with the clean look.  If the AS10 model from Nead Custom Putters was a surfboard, I'd be waxing it up right now and hitting the waves. Screen Shot 2014-02-20 at 2.59.13 PM Looking down at a putter and having confidence is a big part of golfing.  Yes you need to practice, practice and practice your putting, but a solid putter that is appealing to your eye is important as well.  Very impressed with the looks of this putter.  One of my favorite things about the AS10 is the shaft.  The shaft has a bronze color to it that shines to let all other putters know that they are inferior.  Love that!! DSC_0044

Feel:

Ahhh the ever so important topic for a golf club.  As golfers if the club doesn't "feel" good, then we might as well pack up and head home.  I have done a lot of reviews on putters in the last two years and I always stress the weight of a putter and I will again.  A good putter can't be too heavy and it can't be to light.  Too light and there is no feel to what you are doing. Too heavy and your ball goes flying across greens like a bat out of hell.  Finding that optimal weighting is key to making a good putter in my opinion.  The Neads Custom AS10 putter falls into the "very good weighting" category for me.  I loved how I could feel the club head through the impact zone of each putt but was no overwhelmed by the club head. DSC_0047

Performance:

My favorite part of every review is the performance section.  After all, what good is a good looking and feeling golf club that can't perform?  I'll first talk about how the AS10 has what they call the "Roll Groove Face" to create a consistent rolling golf ball off the face.  Most putters these days have some sort of grooves on the face to keep the ball on the putting surface for a true roll.  This is Neads Custom Putters version.  I noticed that nearly every putt, even the long putts would stay fairly well on the putting surface.  As you know, when you have to hit a long 60 foot putt up hill you might have to give the ball a good stroke.  Sometimes a putter can't handle that and the ball will lift up off the turf and lose it's momentum and line that you originally had.  The AS10 putter was able to withstand some longer and harder hit putts. The AS10 Model also was very solid across the face which helps with mis-hits.  When I review a putter, I like to hit off the toe and heel to see how the putter reacts.  Obviously most golfers are not hitting off the heel or toe but there are mis-hits with putters, trust me.  The AS10 did a nice job on those mis-hits allowing for a pretty solid putt without losing too much distance and direction. I am climbing up a mountain to scream and let everyone know about a new line of putters by Wilson Golf. Last month, before the Wilson Staff Vizor Level 2 putters were released to the world.  I was recently selected to be part of a mallet putters testing process.  After going through numerous putters, I have to say that other than my Cleveland SmartSquare, the one that has stuck out more than all the others was Wilson’s new Vizor 2 putters. Product Review: Look 10/10:

I don’t know about you, but the Wilson Vizor M4 has to be one of the best looking putters in 2014. The modern-looking mallet putter comes in a frosted silver head with visor-level-2-model-3-heroblack, white and red colored details. The aggressive look to this putter is filthy especially with the wings on the sides. This putter head reminds me of Batman’s Batarang that will deliver mass punishment to anyone that stands in its way. The best feature to the look is their I-Lock aiming system. Draining putts with both the M3 and M4 couldn’t be any easier. Just align yourself. See a solid black line knowing you are correctly aligned and just let it rain birdies. Even the smallest details of this putter were made in an excellent looking grip and headcover. I give the overall look a 10/10.

Roll 9/10:

Nothing makes me happier than a putter with a excellent feeling face insert. Wilson delivers a knock out punch with a pure rolling machine with a super soft feel. It’s a way of giving you instant feedback on your putting stroke to keep improving your game. I had no problem rolling putts with this club, and I believe you will feel the same. Wilson is giving you a great tool–all you have to do is not screw it up since they have taken care of the rest. Now that you are making more birdies (and taking all your buddies’ money) you can invest in an Aimpoint lesson and get even better. (Review coming soon on Aimpoint. It’s legit, and I am already seeing great results). Make sure to follow Peter Brown who taught me this revolutionary putting system. If you are in the market for a new putter, and you are big about roll, then make sure to checkout Wilson Vizor 2′s. I give the overall roll a 9/10.

Weighting 8/10:

The Vizor 2 line in both the M3 and M4 models both felt great when testing them at Haggin Oaks with Dave from MyGolfSpy. The weighting for both these mallet putters feels great. If I had a choice on purchasing either model, I would go with the M4. I felt that model helped elevate my game compared to M3 but still had just as great of results. I give the overall weighting an 8/10. Screen Shot 2014-02-27 at 9.48.10 AM

Performance 9/10:

When testing all the mallet putters this year, I had an open mind going in on what putter will perform best for myself. Out of the huge bag of shiny clubs I tested I still visor-level-2-model-4-frontcan’t get over on how well the Wilson Vizor line performed. These are high performance putters that you can tell have been given a lot of thought and tinkering to get something Wilson appreciates on putting their name on. The amount of putts I was able to drain with both the M3 and M4 compared to all the others, makes this a serious contender for one of the best putters on the market. Congratulations Wilson R&D! I wish I could shake your hand on a great product line. I give the overall performance rating a 9/10.

Overall Rating 36/40:

Wilson for most people just think “Oh that’s the company that makes basketballs and tennis rackets. What do they know about golf?” Actually quite a bit considering they have more Major Championship victories then any other golf company in the business. Looking at this year alone, I think a lot of companies should watch out because looking at what came from the PGA Show this year, Wilson is pulling out the big guns with some spectacular looking golf clubs. Just the Vizor 2 line deserves a high-five from a solid lineup of putters. I believe you will be taking one home this season if you give them a chance. Bridgestone has been making great forged irons for quite some time now. This year they will make the leap into the putter industry, with the True Balance Putter. The putter was introduced at the 2014 PGA Merchandise show, and it was a hit. The putter will be available in March. Let's take a look at some of the technology that went into Bridgestone's first putter.

Technology:

The most important technology about this putter is that it is counter-counterbalanced. The True Balance putter utilizes an industry-first counter-counterbalance design that removes weight by incorporating an ultralight graphite shaft and 100% EVA grip. This proprietary design counters the heavier steel shafts and rubber grips typically found in putters on the market today. This means that unlike the other companies that are moving the weight to the grip and head, the True Balance is moving as much weight to the sole of the putter as possible. This moves the balance point less than 5" from the sole of the putter.
While developing this product we consulted with some of golf's leading putting experts, as well as a variety of amateurs and Touring professionals. Feedback and testing confirm that when you can feel the head, you can control the head. That has been the guiding principle for every True Balance design decision we've made. We're confident golfers will have an easier time squaring the putter up, judging speed, and controlling distance. -Josh Kinchen, Golf Club and Accessories Marketing Manager - Bridgestone Golf, Inc

Specs:

-Lightweight 100% EVA grip -Graphite Shaft -Dual Layer Grooved Insert -Stainless steel head -There will be 2 models to start with, the TD01 and TD03. One is a face-balanced mallet, the other a Blade. -Initially the putter will only be available in 34" -Loft is 4* and lie 70*

Recommended For:

I would recommend this putter for anyone that has trouble judging the speed on long or short putts. This putter weighs in at about 125-130 grams less than other putters on the market, so I really believe this will help have consistent speed. true-balance-putter-3-800 true-balance-putter-4-800 true-balance-putter-5-800

Bettinardi Studio Stock 15 Putter Review: Get Rolling

I've said it before and I'll say it again, a putter is the most personal and investment-worthy club in the bag.  It will be with you in good times, and in bad.  More often than not when there is cash burning a hole in your golf-addicted wallet a driver is the first thing looked at to upgrade.  But why?  A putter is used for over 50% of your strokes in a round while a driver is used maybe 5-7 times a round (not including the club length measurements it is good for when you drive the ball into a hazard).

Photo Feb 16, 12 13 21 PM

Today's putters can reasonably be separated into two categories, insert vs. milled.  At the top of the list of the best in the milled category is the Bettinardi Studio Stock 15 putter. From Bettinardi.com:
A double bend and face balanced mallet, the Studio Stock 15 is one of our most forgiving models yet, with just the right amount of weight displacement towards the perimeter. The four swooping flanges along with a half oval shaped head make it easy on the eyes, helping you focus on the task at hand. The lively, energetic orange paint scheme on the Studio Stock Series is sure to impress; giving you the poise and confidence needed to make that crucial putt to win it all.

Weight: 358G Material: Mild Carbon Steel Finish: Corona Black Grip: Orange/Gray Pure Grip (Standard or Midsize) Headcover: Standard Studio Stock Series Corona Dexterity: Right and Left Handed Loft: 3° Lie: 71°   How does it look? Right out of the gates, the Studio Stock 15 is a punch in the face with refreshing change of pace than most traditional mid-mallet putters.  It has a wonderful size to it with an unusual and great looking flange design to the cavity.  The all-black head is wonderfully accented by an orange honeycomb-B in the cavity that matches the color of the sole of the club where the full name of the club is displayed in full across the club. The SS 15 is just visually stunning.  A real winner and a beauty to look down at while putting.

Photo Feb 16, 12 13 07 PM

How does it feel? The Bettinardi line of putters are mostly made out of mild carbon steel which is a little different than other milled putters with 303 stainless steel.  While very soft, the SS15 is a "different" kind of soft.  The best way to describe it is a little more dense with a stronger feel at impact.  Soft and strong?  Yes, it seems as if it is possible.  This is largely in part to the FIT face milling that provides an extra amount of softness on top of the native feel of the carbon used in the putter. With good, there always is the chance of bad.  While center strikes are quite enjoyable and addictive, toe and heel strikes are a much different animal.  Off center hits gave an unpleasant feedback that left me baffled.  Feedback is never a bad thing, but this was very detailed, to a fault.

Photo Feb 16, 12 13 38 PM

How does it perform? The SS15 is easily one of the best putters I have ever rolled in terms of accuracy.  I have had such an easy time finding the bottom of the cup.  Between the balance and alignment of the putter, I was able to accurately put a good stroke on the ball 90% of the time. As I said in the "feel" section, there is an abundance of feedback with off center hits.  While the feel of these strikes was not pleasant, I was still able to get a very detailed idea for where the stroke went wrong and why the putt was off line.  Toe hits had decent dispersion and minimal distance loss while heel hits were uncontrollable  and fell short. Final Thoughts: I really do love this putter.  Solid strikes will put an unmatched roll that will accurately find the bottom of the cup (if you are aiming correctly of course).  I, however, am not in love with the feel.  I am a lover of all things milled but the carbon steel is just not my cup of tea.  That being said, feel is such a subjective part of golf.  "To each his own" has never been a truer statement. Do yourself a favor and find a Bettinardi Studio Stock series putter to try.  Chances are you are going to fall in love and never want to let it go.  Keep in mind that you will also have to pay for the quality of the putter.  The Studio Stock 15 putter retails at $399. Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 4.23.26 PM

Odyssey has long been one of the most trusted putters in everyone’s bag, from Tour Players to Amateurs. The first of the insert putters came in 1991 but really took off with the introduction of the Dual Force putters in 1994. Since that time the Odyssey line of putters has had many innovations from inserts to alignment aids. During 2012 Odyssey introduced the Metal-X Putter line. The face was different than most anything on the market and the technology (to be discussed later) was game changing for some. Now we come to the latest incarnation of the Metal-X line with some premium editions. Screen Shot 2014-03-11 at 4.26.32 PM For those that don’t know, what makes the Metal-X face unique is their version of Roll Technology. From Callaway’s website they state that the oval depressions in the face maximize the mechanical lock with the golf dimples which creates fiction helping a more controlled and consistent roll. For anyone that’s rolled these putters or touched the face, there definitely is something unique to the face of the Metal X putters. What makes them different is they’re a combination of 3 of Callaway’s putters. The 3 main components are the precision mill process of the Prototype, the face of the Metal-X and adjustable weight of the Prototype IX. Milled out of a piece of carbon steel the Metal-X milled has 3 sets of customizable weights (10g, 15g and 20g) which provide a lot of different combinations you can try to find the right setting for you. There are six different head styles ranging from the ultra popular #7 style to the ever reliable Rossie Putter. Check out this from Odyssey Golf to see all the styles available. The video below also is a great source of information straight from the company themselves. http://youtu.be/1AiAf_wpSM0

Final Thoughts:

As these are a limited run you may want to run out as quick as you can and try these. As a former Metal X user I’m going to be really on the lookout to try one of these soon. My only issue with the previous was the head weight and seeing as there is a non evasive way to add weight, color me intrigued! These are available now but you should run out soon as they are considered a limited run. Check out the Bunkers Paradise forum for more thoughts on these as our forum members try them out! Bettinardi Golf’s Queen B Model 3 Review: Royalty

What is the most important club in your golf bag? It’s not your driver, your three wood, or your 8 iron. It’s your putter. You use your putter more than any other club in your bag. Why not get the best putter out there? Bettinardi is the best of the best. The best feeling and the best looking. I think Kuchar would agree!

All Bettinardi putters are milled in the USA. While other putter manufacturers have moved oversees, Bettinardi has stayed in America. The president and CEO of Bettinardi Golf, Robert Bettinardi is able to pay attention to every detail of every piece that is made.

I was lucky enough to receive the Bettinardi Queen B Model 3 putter. This putter is made for women golfers but is sold to mostly men golfers.  Over the past month I have been playing with this unbelievable putter. I haven’t three-putted yet! My putting has been a major struggle in my golf game for the past year. I just didn’t have a lot of confidence standing over a putt. But this putter has changed everything.

Looks:

The overall look of this putter can be described in one word; beautiful. The cashmere bronze finish gives this putter a very sleek look. The Queen B also has a Micro Honeycomb face that is unique to Bettinardi that only their machines can produce. One huge feature that I look for in a putter is a good line. With a contrasting white line, this putter makes it so easy to line up a putt and set up with confidence.

This putter comes with a White Pure grip with Bettinardi in gold letters. The head cover follows this color scheme with gold, bronze, and white lettering and design.

Feel:

Feel is so important to me when I try a new putter. Does the weight feel right? Does it feel soft? Does it have a good sound? The feel of this putter is incredible. Short putts, long putts, this putter feels so soft and effortless. The roll off this putter is one of the best I’ve tried. When I try new putters, it is so hard to find the correct weight. I want a heavier head, but nothing too overwhelming. I need a little help staying steady and keeping my stroke smooth. On under pressure putts, this putter kept me still and helped keep my stroke on plane.

Performance:

Throughout this past month, I was able to play multiple rounds and even participated in a few one on one putting contests and I still haven’t three-putted with this putter. Putting is definitely the best part of my game right now. Even if I have a long putt, it feels easy and I have the confidence to hit it close. At first I was worried the honeycomb face would have a strange feel, but just like any other milled face it came off the face so pure and was very consistent.

Specs:

Weight: 360G

Material: Mild Carbon Steel

Grip: White Pure Grip (Standard or Midsize)

Headcover: Standard Queen B Gold

Innovations Golf Clearball Putter Review: Align Your Putting Game

$

First I wanted to thank the crew over at Innovations Golf for allowing us to test out and review the Clearball Putter.  Innovations and new thought processes keep the game of golf moving forward in my opinion and it’s always nice to see new products and ideas hit the market.  Let’s get started by taking a look at the technology behind the Clearball Putter.

The claim by Innovations Golf is that with their alignment technology it will help all golfers improve their putting accuracy between 20-50%.  If that’s the case, then sign me up!

Tech:

The Innovations Golf Clearball Putter is made with a Titanium Carbon Nitride plated mild steel, patented alignment disc embedded into the putter head, smooth stainless steel shaft and comes in three different lengths: 33″, 34″ and 35″.  It also has a giant 2″ sweet spot to help with ball control off the face of the putter. And for you backwards people out there it comes in a left handed version as well.  In case you were wondering the Clearball Putter conforms with USGA Rules.

Screen Shot 2014-04-28 at 7.42.49 AM

Looks:

The Clearball putter is a mallet style putter that is a black with white alignment lines on the top.  It also has a “clear ball” if you will on the back half portion of the putter for assistance with alignment.  The other thing you will notice right away is on the clear glass portion there is a white line on the top and a red line on the bottom, which is also meant to help with alignment which I will explain in the performance area of the review.  The face of the putter has a unique texture to it that keeps the ball from bouncing for a nice true roll of the golf ball.  On the bottom of the Clearball putter there are two weighted balances on each side, which are there from speed and balance control for your putts.  Some might think the Clearball putter is the best looking putter on the market because of the clear glass on the back end of the putter.  I didn’t have much of a problem with that issue at all.

Feel:

I was very impressed with the Clearball putter and it’s feel.  Solid, good weight and a really nice roll.  Weighting on a mallet putter can be tricky.  You make it too heavy and you are blasting balls all over the greens.  I think Innovations Golf did a nice job in the area of weighting.

Screen Shot 2014-04-28 at 10.18.24 AM

I have to mention the grips on the putter.  Love love love the grips on the Innovation Golf putters.  They are big with a flat front portion to get your hands set up properly.  They force you to keep your wrists in a solid position so there is no wrist twisting going on during your stroke.

Performance:

The most important part of any review is right here.  I used the Innovations Golf Clearball putter a few times to get a good feel for it.  A couple practice sessions and then on the course.  During my practice sessions I really wanted to put it through some tough tests.  I hit balls off the heel, off the toe and then center hits to check out if the 2″ sweet spot would make a difference.  What I was impressed with the most is how well this putter performed on each of those.  On each the heel and toe hits I was not losing much distance and control at all, which is rare for a putter.

Next I wanted to talk about the Clearball alignment technology.  There is a red and white focus line on the clear portion of the putter, which help you align your putt but it also helps you make sure your putter is flat and balanced.  There are also the three lines prior to the clear area, which were outstanding as far as helping you align.  I have to say that the red and white line areas really won’t make that much of a difference if you already have a solid putting stance.  That portion of the putter is really for beginners who are way off in their putting stance.

Overall:

Overall I have to say that I was impressed by the Clearball putter.  I thought it had a great feel and roll.  I also believe that many beginner golfers will benefit from the red and white alignment tools on the putter as well.  I liked this putter so much that I actually recommended to my father.

Bombtech Golf Grenade Putter Review: Putt With Confidence

$

0

In the past 2 years we have seen Bombtech Golf burst into the scene with intense engineering and quality in their flagship product, the “Grenade” driver.  They quickly followed up with a booming line of fairway woods.  It is safe to say that Bombtech has made a name for themselves in the distance realm, but as the old addage says “drive for show, putt for dough”.

Enter the Bombtech Grenade Putter.

The Bombtech Grenade Putter is a 445 gram, Mild Carbon Steel, CNC milled, E-nickel coated mallet of epic proportions.  It was engineered to combine high MOI with a heavier than normal head to provide a stable-pendulum stroke.

From Bombtechgolf.com:

Pure Engineering – 100% MADE IN USA
The Grenade golf putter was co-engineered with the University of Vermont’s Engineering department. This unique relationship and pure engineering approach created the high MOI Grenade golf putter. What do we consider high MOI? The Grenade golf putter offers a MOI of 5900 g*cm^2.

The Benefits of High MOI

  • Reduces club head twisting on off-center putts
  • 445 gram weight quiets hand during stroke
  • CNC milled carbon steel offers great feel and sound
  • E-Nickel coating provides audible feedback at impact
  • 50% tighter dispersion on off-center putts
  • No skip and first to roll (Video)

Precision CNC Milled
The Grenade golf putter is CNC milled out of a solid piece of carbon steel. The CNC milling process offers the finest feel and sound available on the market today. No inserts, no forging just solid steel!

[vsw id="cyFuyrtW3ok" source="youtube" width="390" height="200" autoplay="no"]

How does it look?

Just when you think you have seen every style of putter in every iteration something special happens, innovation.  The Grenade putter has a wonderfully clean satin finish with the trademark neon green used as paint fill for the two horizontal alignment aids in the cavity of the putter.  The undercarriage of the Grenade has the companies logo, model name “Grenade”, and “Made in Vermont” elegantly engraved with no paint, adding a classy sense of craftsmanship without a lot of flash.

Moving on to the design of the putter you will immediately notice the different, yet sexy oval that creates negative space from the back of the sweet spot to the near edge of the flange.  This open design really just puts off a real sense of creativity and engineering when in contrast to the wonderful flowing lines of the rest of the mallet.

knockout 14 (2)

How does it feel?

I am a milled-face junkie.  I believe that feel is priority #1 with a putter as it directly affects distance control and feedback.  The Bombtech Grenade gets my absolute top marks in this area.  The milled carbon steel combined with the heavier head-weight gave me feedback that rivals the household names in the milling game.  I was able to feel a delightfully soft, yet solid impact on sweet spot strikes as well as the contrast of center-to-missed strikes as well.  Toe and heel misses both gave non-harsh feedback that is a breath of fresh air as they can often be confidence-reducing.

Worth mentioning is the sound the Grenade makes.  It can be classified as a metallic “ting” but I found something quite nice about the effect the open slot in the cavity had on the sound.  It reverberated slightly and almost evened out the sound a bit to almost a tuning fork-like pitch.  I actually really enjoyed it and found it very unique.

knockout 23 (2)

How does it perform?

I went into this review with a lot of excitement purely because I wanted to see just how much the “engineering” that went into this putter really affected the performance.  I was not disappointed.  There are a few areas in which the Grenade excels and one really important one.

The Grenade was designed with a heavy head to help induce a consistent pendulum and high MOI to avoid twisting.  Bombtech did a great job in execution.  I had one small issue with this design as I found that with the standard grip, if I started the putter offline with a bad stroke, it stayed offline.  The pendulum effect did it’s job but almost to a fault.  I was able to see what the issue was (obviously my technique was at fault) but it may speak to a certain level of forgiveness in that area and how it compromises it.  I was able to adjust for this by putting a heavier grip that allowed me to feel the weight a little better for my tastes (this is a purely subjective adjustment based on my personal preferences in a putter and what works for me).  It is worth noting that Bombtech offers a standard size grip as well as an oversized 120-g version.

In my eyes the most important aspect of performance is the consistency of strike off the face and how miss hits are handled.  The Grenade did a phenomenal job in it’s compensation for toe and heel miss hits by keeping a great roll on the ball and deviating very little from the intended line.  I found that it was among the most accurate putters I have tested to date.  However, the real gem here is it’s distance control.  The Grenade was so consistent in how it rolled the ball that out of about 1000 putts I have experienced 2, yes 2 “hot” putts.  I have never felt as in-touch with a putter as I have the Grenade.  It has provided a high level of confidence in being able to roll the ball the distances desired in a very short period of time.

Final Thoughts:

Bombtech Golf has defied the odds for a start up golf company putting out products that can rival the big names in the industry.  The latest release of the Grenade putter and the quality of design, engineering, and materials is an indication of how serious they are about putting out products that should not be overlooked.  I am beyond impressed with the Grenade.  Will it stay in my bag?  That is still undecided for only 1 reason, it is a center-shafted version and I putt my best with a plumbers-neck.

Do yourself a favor and take a look at Bombtechgolf.com.  You just might find exactly what you were looking for.

Wilson Staff 8802 Putter Review | A Classic becomes a Legend

Today I’m going to tell you about a product that has been a golf standard for decades. This is the quintessential putter and the perfect embodiment of the tool to be used on the green. If you don’t have this putter in your bag, then you most likely learned to putt with one or chances are that there is one hanging out in your grandfather’s garage. The Wilson Staff 8802 putter is the come-back of a timeless classic; and a gesture from Wilson to remind us to not fix what isn’t broken.

Let’s dive into the nitty-gritty. This putter features a classic heel shafted head milled from a quality stainless steel weighing in at 335 grams. The 8802 is mated to a True Temper Head Speed stepless design shaft and uses a Lamkin 3GEN smooth pistol grip. Measuring at 35” this putter is suited for the comfort of most players.

***** Follow us on Twitter *****

Looks:

The head cover of this putter was the first thing to catch my eye. Red, white and gold is a classy combination. Freeing the putter from that sweet-looking boot, you are presented with a sleek satin finish blade style head, mill grooves on the face and a sole highly polished to a mirror finish. The fluted and flared shaft is as essential to the look of this putter as eating soup with a spoon. The smooth red putter grip screams with attitude and purpose.

8802 Putter Classic

Feel:

Using this putter, nostalgia was my first feeling. The pistol grip is smooth, tacky and properly shaped. The putter also head has a really nice heft to it as it feels heavier than the head shape leads one to believe. This will help you with tempo. Looking down at the head, the top line is thin and very clean; there is no line or dot helping you. Before you panic let me tell you that because the head is so simple, using the straight edge of the blade itself was enough to focus for alignment. This putter offers a tremendous amount of feedback and it will let you know when you hit the ball just right.

Performance:

It was easy to find the right tempo with this putter due to the head weight. Head, shaft and grip are well balanced which help in feeling connected and compact with lots of control. The putter rolls the ball nicely with the help of some offset. The face of this putter is very consistent on center hits. Accuracy will depend solely on the player. I personally use a center shafted putter that fits my square-to-square putting stroke. The heel shafted putter will encourage you to swing more in an arch, so keep in mind ball position will be very important. However, the 8802 performed very well, especially on those delicate shots where speed is critical; toe-putting is your friend.

This putter is tremendously versatile. Let’s keep things clear, this works best for creative players. This putter is not automatic. It is a true testament to the Indian being responsible for putting balls into the cup. If you know what you’re doing, this putter will reward you.

Wilson 8802 Putter Address

Overall:

This putter has been around for over 50 years. It has been used by the champions who became legends, like Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus and Ben Crenshaw. It’s produced by a company who was been around long enough that there is nothing left to prove. The 8802 carries the heritage and the pedigree needed to become an icon in golf. It surely deserves a spot in your bag or on your wall.

This putter is priced at around $179. Rest assured that it is a good buy. It is made of high quality materials. It has a finish like jewelry, and it will get the job done. This is definitely a product targeted towards the player aware of golf history and appreciates styling.  It performs as you tell it to and has the looks to make you tingle. Might not be for everyone, especially those looking to improve their game or on an extreme budget, but it is pure and true to golf; an icon in history reborn time and time again.

Mantis B Blade Putter Review: Keep Your Eye on the Ball

I have played sports my entire life, including football, basketball, baseball and golf and I have never heard anyone say, “Hey, keep your eye on the bat or keep your eye on the club!”  The term is and has always been, keep your eye on the ball.  Mantis Golf has taken that principle to heart when they started making putters.  I’ll explain a little bit more about that below.  But real quick, what makes a putter good?  Obviously there are certain intangibles such as good feel, solid roll, and of course good control.  A lot goes into making a putter that has all of that.  So let’s take a closer look at the Mantis B Putter.

The Mantis B putter is a blade style putter that has a high MOI (moment of inertia) to help with mis-hits off the toe and heel.  Mantis focused on a heel-toe weighting (Face Insert) clubhead to give you a solid feel on every putt.  The Mantis B putter has a polyurethane face to give it a good feel at contact.  The weight of the club is 355g, which is about standard with a blade putter.

I will discuss the looks of the putter below but I wanted to mention the muted green color of the putter as it is part of the technology utilized by Mantis to set their putters apart from other companies.  They have a green muted coloring to help the club blend into the green.  This is all part of the “keep your eye on the ball” philosophy.

Mantis B Bottom

Looks:

This is the first time I’ve ever seen a green putter, and I have to say it was very interesting. The putter blends in with the grass, allowing you to focus your attention on the alignment aid and the ball. Because the white line is more visible, you can really see the path of your putter head on the way to the ball and I saw right away that I had been putting with an out to in stroke.  The bottom of the club has a sleek looking shiny silver that makes it look classy.   It will definitely catch the eye of others playing with you out on the course.

Mantis B Putter Alignment

Feel:

The Mantis Putter has a very soft feel off the face. I play a firmer faced putter and wasn’t used to the feeling at first, but grew to like it after a few rolls. The softness gives you a greater feeling of control off of the face, which I think is crucial when picking a putter.  The grip was very nice as it was tacky and you don’t have to worry about slippage.

Mantis B Putter Grip

If I had to nitpick one thing, it would be the angle of the putter’s face. The way the shaft and clubhead are oriented make this putter more ideal for a player who sets up with a bit of forward press. If you are used to a straight up and down setup, it could take a couple practice sessions to get used to the Mantis Putter.

Performance:

After I got used to the proper set up with this club, I was able to give it some solid strokes.  Like I mentioned above, it is a softer feeling face, which some people might love and some might not like at all.  I use a harder surfaced face because that is what I’m used to.  But I can see how someone who likes to “feel” their putts would really enjoy this putter.  With that being said, I had no issues with distance control and consistency throughout my testing.  The balls came off the face nicely with no popping up, even on longer lag putts.   With the muted green coloring against the white lines, this putter is extremely easy to line up.  I could see exactly where the putter was going and what it was doing, all while “keeping my eye on the ball”.

Overall:

As one of the more feel dependent clubs in the bag, you really have to try this putter to see if you like it or not. Personally, I like a firmer feel and a more upright shaft at address.

I would recommend the Mantis Putter to anyone who likes to play with a bit of forward press at address and also to anyone who relies on strict alignment vs. feel. The way this putter is set up, as long as you are aiming the right way, you’ll have a chance to make any putt on any green.

TaylorMade Ghost Spider Si Putter Review: Performance & Looks

$

0

You have all seen the putter that crawls around on the greens dropping putts on golf tours around the world right?  Or course, I’m talking about the TaylorMade Spider Si Putter.  I have heard so many good things about this putter, but I took out the Spider Si putter with no expectations, simply because I’m not a mallet style putter guy.

I decided to go about this review with an open mind.

-= More at Our New Bunkers Paradise Review Center =-

So what has TaylorMade Golf done to make this putter one of the top performing mallet style putters?  I am always interested to see who still step up next with new technology or ideas to make improvements.

Technology:

  • Pure Roll Insert – The PureRoll Surlyn insert that TaylorMade has put into the Spider Si is meant to give you a soft-yet solid feel at impact and to create a smooth roll along the green’s surface.
  • MOI – Moment of Inertia: TaylorMade claims that the Spider Si is the most stable putter they have ever created.  With counterbalancing the putter, it increases the overall MOI of the club.  The high MOI head helps with off center hits.
  • Counterbalance - TaylorMade has added a heavy grip (150 grams) to counterbalance the mallet head of the putter.  The ideas is to give you the benefits of a belly putter without having to anchor it to your body.   The head weighs 380 grams and they also have a 15 inch shaft.

To answer my question above, TaylorMade has utilized the PureRoll Insert to create a very nice rolling golf ball off the face that is solid pretty much every stroke and changed the MOI by creating a counterbalanced putter.  Yes this club is considered a mallet, but it feels a plays unlike any mallet I have hit.  It actually feels more like a long handled blade.

Taylormade Ghost Spider SI Putter Bottom

Looks:

I you are afraid of spiders, this club probably isn’t for you.  All joking aside, TaylorMade went all in with the Spider theme.  The Spider Si comes with a sweet head cover that is blasted with a giant spider on it.  The grip also has a spider on it and then of course the club head itself looks like a spider.  I thought it was pretty clever marketing how they incorporated the spider theme throughout the entire golf club.   The spider theme is unlike any golf club I have seen, which makes it very unique.

As you can see from the photos, it is a mallet style putter with a lot going on.  Looking down at the putter though it’s actually quite simple.  It has a solid black finish in the middle of the club face area, with three lines and a small tab leading out the back for alignment.  Then you have the long spider legs that are white coming off the side of the putter leading to the back.  The contrast in the black and white also help you align your putts and square up the club head.

As far as the shaft goes, like I mentioned above, it is a bit longer shaft with a thick red grip that looks pretty darn cool if you ask me.

Taylormade Ghost Spider SI Putter Angle

Feel:

Let’s start at the top of the club, which is the grip.  As mentioned before it is a bit heavier to help with the counterbalance of the club.  It is a thick red grip that is very tacky.  You won’t lose your grip on this putter even if your hands are sweaty or wet.  A very nice addition to the Spider Si putter.

The Spider Si putter feels very nice at impact.  It has a quietness to it, but you can still feel the ball come off the face extremely solid.  On the face of the club you will see grooves of the PureRoll technology. (Photo Above) If you hit the ball within the PureRoll area on the face you will get the same exact solid feel every time.

Be careful with this putter because if you mis-hit on the toe or heel out of the PureRoll area, it will noticeably effect your putts. That being said, it’s nearly impossible to miss the designated area of the PureRoll grooves.

Performance:

First thing I want to discuss about performance is the adjustment period of switching to a counterbalanced putter.  I have heard a lot of people say there is a long adjustment period in learning how it works and getting used to it.  I’m not sure exactly what is taking them so long to get used to.  Let’s be honest, a putter is a stick with a club at the end.  You swing it and hit a golf ball.  Ok, it’s not quite that simple, but you get my point.  I have been a standard blade putter guy my entire golf career and I was able to get used to the counterbalanced feel of the Spider Si within the first time using it.

The only thing that took a bit getting used to was choking up on the grip since the shaft if longer than your standard putter.

When testing out putters here at Bunkers Paradise, we like to see how they perform with long putts as well as the short up close putts. Let’s take a closer look

Long Putts -  I set up balls ranging from 20 to 30 feet.  The first set was from about 20 feet away from the hole.  After about five putts I knew this putter was a performer.  I was impressed with the consistency in distance the Spider Si had.  Putt after putt I was finishing right around the hole with about a 2-foot dispersion.  I then backed up further and again had the same results.  I did have to get used to the mallet style and the alignment, but that only took a few strokes.  Each putt was staying low to the ground with hardly any bounce off the face.

Short Putts - The Spider Si is extremely easy to square up on short putts.  With the contrasting white and black and the three line ball alignment, I had no problems setting up my line to drop putts.  With the easy alignment and it’s consistent distance control I had no issues with short putts.

Overall:

I was very impressed with how the TaylorMade Spider Si putter performed.  Like I mentioned above, I have been a blade style player my entire golf career and was a bit leery trying out a putter with so much more technology behind it.  But after getting used to the counterbalance and longer shaft, I was rolling putts with a lot of consistency and accuracy.

Axis 1 Joey C Putter Review: Get Balanced

$

0

I’ve had the opportunity to review several of the newest putters in 2014 and there have been a lot of very good ones.  Last year, I had the chance to review the Axis 1 Eagle putter, which impressed me all around.  The only negative I had with the Eagle was that is was a bit too light. So when I got the chance to check out the Axis 1 Joey C putter I was pretty excited as it’s a bit heavier than the Eagle.  Let’s get into this review by checking out the specs and technology.

-== Join Bunkers Paradise on Facebook for More Reviews, Photos and More ==-

Specs:

  • 350 grams
  • Classic blade
  • CNC milled face
  • Copper insert
  • Stainless Steel shaft with vibration dampening core
  • Stainless Steel counterweight screw for perfect final balance calibration
  • Standard size Winn grip
  • Individually balanced

What makes the Axis 1 different from other putters?  Other than its uniquely different look at address, it is also a perfectly balanced putter. Here is an easy to follow graphic to show you exactly what they mean by a perfectly balanced putter and how it makes a difference.

Axis 1 Balanced Putters Graphic

PUTTER TORQUE RATING

Here is another reason why Axis 1 putters are unique compared to the rest of the golf world.  The Putter Torque Rating or PTR sits at Zero.  What is PTR?  The PTR scientifically measures and rates the static torque about the axis of a putter shaft. In golfers’ terms: how prone certain putters are to “opening up” when addressing and swinging the club. Or you just could think of PTR like this- it measures how prone each specific model is to opening up and forcing you to push your putts.  Here is another graph by Axis 1 to show you some comparisons.

Putter Torque Ratings

Looks:

With any Axis 1 putter, it might take a bit of getting used to as the neck is bent in a manner that could confuse someone at first look.  The Joey C putter is like all other Axis 1 putters when it comes to the look at address.  As mentioned above, all Axis 1 putters are perfectly balanced and the shape and bending of the neck is how they accomplish that.  I have had people ask me if I bent the shaft on the putter myself.  But as you can see from the photo below, it is a well made putter with a purpose behind its look.  The bent neck also plays a role in your alignment.  Not only do you have a black line that runs along the top of the putter to help square yourself up, you can also use the bend in the neck.  Your golf ball will sit right inside a “pocket” when looking down.  With these two ways to align your ball, it is quite simple to get your direction squared away.  There also is a line that runs straight back from the ball for an additional alignment aid.  The Joey C putter also comes with a green grip and green head cover that match, which is a pretty fun look.

Axis 1 Joey C Neck

Feel:

The grip on the Axis 1 Joey C putter is a standard size WINN putting grip.  I’ll be the first to say that I’m not an expert when it comes to grips and their technology.  All I can go by is how it feels and performs.  The grip is squared in front to lock your hands into proper position.  It was soft and tacky and after laying it down in the morning dew, I had no problems gripping the putter.

As far as touch and feel go with this putter, it had a good feeling.  It wasn’t too hard nor was it too soft and mushy like some putters I have played with.  The tricky part with the Axis 1 putters is on mis-hits.  Because of their technology, it is difficult to feel if you are hitting in the exact sweet spot.  Now that is good and bad.  The reason it’s good is because this putter is the best on mis-hits that I have ever played with.  It’s bad because you get comfortable with this club making up for your bad ball striking.  It’s always good to know if you are having mis-hits as it will help you maintain a better putting stroke in the long term.

Performance:

This is truly one of my favorite performing putters.  I know that some people won’t give this club a try simply because of the way it looks.  Big mistake in my opinion.  Distance control is as good as you will find on the market.  As I mentioned above, your mis-hits will roll almost as good as a solid strike.  I have been using this putter everywhere for the last month so I could give you a solid breakdown.  I have tested it on the practice greens numerous times, at my home putting green and also on the course and I walk away pleased every time.

  • Short Putts:

When using the Joey C putter on short putts you will find it incredibly easy to set up your putting line.  You lock your ball into that squared up area and you are good to go.  With that type of alignment you really don’t have to worry about pushing or pulling your putts.  The concern on close putts is making sure you are properly aligned to ram it in the hole.  With the Joey C putter I had no issues with that. It’s a confidence building putter for sure.  This is where I noticed the “perfect balance” of this putter the most, mainly because it’s nearly impossible to push your putt.

Axis 1 Joey C Back Close

  • Long Putts:

Long putts are all about distance control.  I see so many golfers struggle with the proper speed on long putts and leave their ball either extremely short of the hole or they go flying past the hole.  Longer putts are something that I have been working on for quite some time since I’m not always knocking down the pin on my approach shots.  I was using the Odyssey Versa #1 prior to making the switch to the Joey C putter.  The one thing I really liked about the Versa was its feel on long putts.  When using the Versa the ball would come off the face nicely without popping up off the green, therefore having better distance control.

The Joey C putter performs just as well in that regard.  I get a clean roll every time with this putter, which is comforting especially when looking at a long uphill 50 foot putt.

The most impressive part about this putter is the distance control.  I took 20 balls out to the practice greens one day and stood about 30 feet from the hole.  I hit putt after putt until all 20 golf balls were gone.  I looked over at my grouping of balls and was pleasantly surprised.  Several dropped in the hole, but the ones that didn’t were within a few feet of each other.  Just to further prove my point, of the 20 I hit, I can recall two that hit extremely poorly.  But when looking at my group of balls I didn’t know which were the two bad shots.

Overall:

Some of this might seem a bit like a sales pitch, but it’s because I am honestly so impressed with how this putter performs.  I understand that this putter might not be for everyone because of the looks.  But if you can get past the looks of this putter, you will be pleasantly surprised with the performance.

The Axis 1 Joey C putter sells for $229.  For more information click HERE.

Buzelli STA-1 Putter Review: Pride of Hard Work

$

In the past couple years it seems like there have been a lot of new start up companies in the golf industry.  Some have excelled while others have struggled and it’s always good to see new faces and products challenge the “big boys” of the golf industry.  I have had the opportunity to try a lot of these new products and in some cases, they performed better than many of the bigger companies and other cases, not so much.

Buzelli Golf is one of those newer companies to take the field.  Buzelli Golf’s main focus is making putters, however, they also make a putter grip and divot tool.  In this review, I will be focusing on the putter only, so let’s take a closer look.

Who is Buzelli Golf?

“From the first time I picked up a golf club, I knew I wanted to be in the golf industry.” – Ryan Buzelli

Ryan Buzelli started rejuvenating classic golf clubs in 2009 by cleaning, re-shafting, re-gripping, media blasting, hand painting, and selling the classics.  After a few years, something in his brain clicked:

“Why am I spending my time with other manufacturers clubs? Why not make my own putter?”

Following his dream, he took the steps towards making putters and divot tools and decided to back the putters with an industry leading warranty, make them in the USA, and stay small enough to maintain a personal relationship with his customers. Ryan Buzelli prides himself on hard work as he has a background as a flooring installer, recording engineer, musician, golfer, wine maker and a family man.

SPECS

  • CNC Milled Carbon Steel Head (Soft Carbon Low Glare Black Chrome Finish)
  • Black True Tempter Stepped Shaft
  • 355 Grams
  • 70 Degree Lie
  • 3 Degree Loft
  • 32.5′-37″ Options
  • Right Handed Only (Left Coming Soon)

LOOKS

The Buzzeli STA-1 Putter is a classic blade style putter that many have been accustomed to for years.  It has a clean look with it’s black chrome finish.  Because of the black chrome finish you definitely won’t be struggling with any glare standing over your putts.  It has a single white line on the top of the putter to help with alignment during your putts.   The bottom of the putter features a red, white a blue Buzelli design, which shows Ryan’s pride that it was built in the USA. No silly gimmicks with this putter as far as looks go.

FEEL

If you have read any of my putter reviews in the past, you know I can’t stand a putter that isn’t weighted correctly.  I have hit blade style putters that felt like rocks, while others are so light they feel like a feather in your hand.  The weight of a putter is key for me when it comes to feel.  It’s crucial that I can feel what the putter is doing in my hands and from what I can see, Buzelli found the right combination when it comes to weight relative to looks.

The 355 grams of weight in the putter head allowed me to feel what I was doing with my putts, but at the same time get enough momentum for a solid strike. The club face is solid so you get a nice crisp strike on the ball with each stroke.

Buzelli STA-1 Putter

PERFORMANCE

If you take a look at the face of the Buzelli STA-1 putter, you can see the cross cut lines.  I have heard so many different names for this concept, so putting it simply, they are there to keep your ball from popping up off the face of the putter to create a consistent roll.  The Buzelli STA-1 putter cross cut lines work well, as I was able to roll putts consistently.

As I mentioned before, I liked the weighting on this club.  If a putter is too light, it is really difficult on those long lag putts to know how hard to hit the ball.  I did not have any issues with long lag putts with the Buzelli STA-1 putter as far as distance was concerned.

The only issue I had with this putter was it’s forgiveness on misses.  Yes, you can miss-hit your putter people.  I hit several putts off the toe and several off the heel, which is standard for when I’m testing a putter.  The heel hits were actually really good, but the toe hits really suffered.  So if you are going to mis-hit this putter, do it on the heel.

Overall:

The Buzelli STA-1 putter is a solid putter with a great black chrome finish, good weighting and if struck well, can perform well.  The costs for most boutique club makers are usually tied into economies of scale, so if you can afford to take a chance on an upcoming brand, the Buzelli STA-1 putter comes in at $269.95.

Odyssey Metal X-Milled Versa Putter #1 Review: Roll It True

$

0

There’s a reason that a putter is known as the “moneymaker” in a golfer’s bag. Whether it’s for that $5 skin amongst your friends or millions of dollars on Tour, you need a putter you can be confident in to get the ball in that hole.

Odyssey Golf has long been one of the most notable companies in golf when it comes to developing and coming out with these “moneymakers”. As such, I was excited to get my hands on their new Metal-X Milled Versa #1 putter. Putting has always been the one aspect of my game in which I have the most confidence, so I was excited to see how I’d perform with this new Metal-X Milled putter.

Specs:

  • Availability: Right, Left
  • Loft: 3 degrees
  • Length: 33”, 34”, 35”
  • Offset: Full shaft
  • Lie Angle: 70 degrees
  • Head weight: Adjustable (340g, 350g, 360g)

Looks:

The Metal-X Milled #1 putter is a classic blade style putter. One thing that immediately jumped out at me when I took off the putter cover was the milled oval depression design on the putter face. This is the Metal-X Roll technology that Odyssey created to give you a more controlled and true roll on all putts. Even before I got to test whether this technology works or not, my first thought was that it was definitely a cool look.

This was my first time lining up an Odyssey Versa putter and the contrasting alignment look really helped me with my putting. With the silver-black-silver finish providing a nice contrast to a white golf ball, it was very easy to feel confident with my alignment at address. Feeling confident over a putt is 95% of the battle for me, so that was a big deal for me.

Oh, and the shaft is black. Just. Awesome.

Feel:

Upon first feel, I immediately noticed that the Metal-X Milled putter was lighter than my regular Scotty Cameron putter. I was curious to see how the lighter weight would affect my stroke. Surprisingly, after a couple rounds and practice sessions on the putting green, I felt more in control of my stroke, from my backswing to follow through. Although the sample size was small, I had a better feel of what the putter head was doing on my putts.

I interchanged the weights to test the feel of all the weights. The 340g was a bit too light for me while the 360g felt more familiar compared to my regular putter. In the end, the standard 350g was the best feel for me but the option to customize the weight to every golfer’s preference was a nice touch.

Performance:

I took the Metal-X Milled Versa putter out to the putting greens and also used it during a couple rounds to get a true review on its performance.

Putter Line2

Short putts

On shorter putts, alignment is the most important factor for me. As long as I have it lined up confidently, I know I’m going to be ramming the putt into the back of the cup. As mentioned earlier, the contrasting alignment Versa technology makes the alignment process super easy. I knew that my ball was going to go where I aimed it, making all the shorter putts that much easier. A great confidence building putter.

Long putts

Recently on the course, this is one area I’ve unfortunately been getting a lot of practice in. Nothing frustrates me more than when I see the ball popping up off the putter face and not getting that pure roll. This is where the milled oval depression design came in. With the Metal-X Milled Versa putter, it was nice to see that the ball rolled true and never got off the ground on the longer putts.

Putter head

The distance control with this putter was the best performing aspect for me. My first time ever using this putter was during a review round. Even with no practice putts before the round, I was dropping in a couple bombs from 30-40 feet. You know, the ones where the ball rolls in perfectly on its last couple rotations. There’s no better feeling!

On the practice green, I hit a bunch of 30 footers, both uphill and downhill, with the goal being to get as many as possible within the length of my putter shaft – otherwise known as gimme territory amongst my friends. I was consistently able to get it pretty close to this coveted gimme territory, even holing a few along the way.

Overall:

The Odyssey Metal-X Milled Versa #1 putter is a putter that can build any player’s confidence on the greens. It’s easy to be confident when you have a putter that is going to roll true and on target. This is an easy recommendation to anyone who is looking to shave some more strokes off their handicap on the greens.

BPutters Heavy Hammer Review: Italian Milled Custom Putter

$
0
0

Ever had those days where you feel like you can’t make a putt from even a foot away from the hole? I have been there more times than I care to admit.

In today’s market there are hundreds if not thousands of putters to choose from to sink those knee rattlers. How do you find ‘the one’ to give you the confidence to ‘let it go’ and putt with confidence?

-= Check Out MORE Putter Reviews Here =-

Bunkers Paradise was given a great opportunity to review an up-and-comer:  The Heavy Hammer was born from the brilliant golf minds at BPutters.

BPutter Logo View

Who is BPutters?

BPutters is a Custom Italian Putter Company that prides itself with its unique approach to milled putters. The company started on the links discussing designing a putter unlike any other. They found themselves committed to bringing the golfer imaginative designs that will satisfy the golfer worldwide. How, you ask? They pride themselves on utilizing the finest components to ensure quality without compromise. Each and every design is custom made from the designers heart. Bottom line–> create a putter that fits in the player’s hand firmly and helps improve the golfers confidence as he/she steps up to every putt.

BPutters says it best:

We firmly believe that everything in the golf sector takes origin from passion, love and the intense desire to tell a story, that’s the spirit we approached this experience both in intensity and complexity.

BPutters is bringing the golfer a unique line of putters forged from a single block of Italian stainless steel using the best  materials possible to ensure quality for the player and more putts made on the course.

news_11_big

In my mind, a putter is the most important club in the bag. 40% of your score is on the short grass. Think about it. If you usually shoot around a 90, how many putts did you take? My guess is around 36+ and that’s 40% of your score. Therefore, a key to success for the golfer may be sinking more putts with a putter that feels good in your hands.

So back to the question of how do we choose a putter when there are so many out there? To be honest, its all about trial and error but here at Bunkers Paradise, we had been given an opportunity to give the  BPutters Heavy Hammer a run for its money. Let us share our thoughts and findings for you to decide if this may be the ‘birdie-sinker’ in your near future.

LOOKS:

BPutter Toe View

The Heavy Hammer is gorgeous. Yes, I have to go there. It truly is a looker. Sleek lines, milled head, offset and it actually looks kinda like a hammer. The Hammer has a very unique look with attention to detail right down to the face of the putter. The mere fact that it is made from a single block of Italian 303 stainless steel makes the putter shine.

What I noticed right off the bat and was able to confirm is that the putter is 1 piece billet milled head. It has a the low loft you need to keep the ball rolling on the green (2-5degrees).  I like looking down and knowing my ball isn’t going to hop, skip and jump to the hole.

Overall the look was stunning and simply a confidence booster from the looks.

FEEL:

product_big_01a

The most important thing to me is how the putter feels steeping up to a 6 foot downhill left to right putt. Yes, I know, a total knee knocker. Well, I felt like the Hammer set up perfectly to the putt and the stroke felt smooth and strong. In other words, When I set the blade behind the ball, there was not a ‘jiggle’ from the putter head. It sat there motionless and that is huge for me in putting.

The BPutter Hammer I reviewed was 35 inches and perfect for my specifications and needs (I worked with different putters in my career and realized 35 inches in length was perfect for me…we are all different). Having  a putter that ‘feels’ right in length is huge to overall success and BPutter can custom make the length to your personal specifications.

One more thing to note is that the Heavy Hammer is toe balanced and weighs 370 grams. This is something that also is very important in how a putter feels. It needs to feel totally solid at set up and through the stroke. I am not a fan of putters that feel like your swinging a cement brick or on the opposite end of the spectrum as you try to control swinging a feather. The Heavy Hammer nails it right in the sweet spot of feel.

product_big_01b

PERFORMANCE:

This is where I can share with you how the putter handled the Kate Hughes Challenge. I decided since a putter is so important to my game and overall success scoring, I wanted to play multiple times on different courses to see if BPutters Hammer was as good as they say.

BPutters Hammer In Action

The verdict is in. After several rounds on various courses and conditions, the Hammer performed like a champ. I made more birdies that I have in a long time. I have to admit that I was concerned with the name ‘Heavy Hammer’ and was nervous it would be too heavy for my longer putts. I stand corrected. It was actually very easy to stroke the ball from any distance.

I mentioned earlier that having a putter in your hand like the Hammer that got the ball ‘rolling’ and not ‘jumping’ off the face is key to success on the greens. I had the opportunity of having one of our pros get down to ground level with his eyes and really ‘see’ if the ball jumped off the face. It did not. Mission accomplished.

No matter the greens surface – Bermuda, bent or combo with poa annua grass, the ball rolled with confidence down the chosen target line.

Lastly, I have to comment on the putter face. There was a real soft yet firm feel with every strike. Once the ball struck the blade you felt and heard a solid knock that was in perfect tone. I’m not one for strange sounds from a putter and the BPutters Hammer has a gentle sound soothing to the ears.

Overall, the BPutter Heavy Hammer performed well in every scenario I created to test its ability to make the difficult putt.

OVERALL THOUGHTS:

Putting is one of the most important aspects to the overall success of the golfer’s game. It makes sense to have a putter in your hand that you feel confident with from 90 feet out to 12 inches. BPutters is a solid company and puts their heart into making each putter fit your specifications.

I don’t know about you, but my putter is my best friend on the course and I want to have a putter that can allow me to walk up to the putt with confidence and drain the putt. BPutters is a great choice for your next ‘birdie/par sinker’.
